The Montreal based artist released his debut EP Synthetic Soul in late February, drawing comparisons to Tame Impala because of the ability to use soundscapes in a psychedelic and soothing manner. Chiiild has shared influences ranging from Pink Floyd to Marvin Gaye and works to bend genres in an era that tends to love hybrid genre and genre fluidity. After touring with Emotional Oranges throughout the fall, beginning a North American tour in September, and then crossing the pond for nine more shows, Chiiild was able to release three singles and gain a following.
Despite not having a full project available on platforms until this year, Chiiild has helped other artists with production in the past including big names such as Usher, Diplo, and Skrillex. Now, the Canadian alt-indie artist is finally getting the attention he deserves and will continue to search for his synthetic sound.
A few weeks back I went into this EP with no expectations and was completely blown away. Chiiild made me feel lost at times during the course of the album because of the slow-paced experimental sounds and that is exactly what I needed during these uncertain and stressful times. When things are not going your way sometimes sitting back, relaxing, and listening to an album is a necessity. This is an EP that is built for those days, or in this case weeks. Throughout the project, lyricism is put on full display throughout each song and specifically in a feature from American-Zimbabwean singer Shungudzo on "Back To Life". Chiild illustrates uniqueness by swirling powerful metaphorical references within trippy tracks, as well as boasting an interesting mix of both old and new.
The way that this project is thoughtfully crafted through cosmic R&B, electro-funk, and soothing harmonies orchestrates an unbelievable debut project from the rising star. This summer, Chiiild was set to play at Gov Ball and oh boy his set would have been fun to attend. During these times of social distancing I urge you to explore new music and maybe even hop on the cool wave that is Chiiild.
