In 2018 the British trip hop band was forced to cancel their remaining tour dates after drummer Joe Seaward was critically injured in a bike accident, after being hit by a truck in Dublin. Seaward went through many intensive surgeries, including a procedure that worked to reshape part of his skull after being raveled in the trucks trailer. After this horrific incident the road to recovery for Seaward and the entire group was difficult, although they never lost hope. During the recovery process they would occasionally post updates on Joe and we all knew that they would be BACK.
Fast forward to late 2019. After not releasing new music since 2016, 'Wavey Davey' and the rest of the crew dropped the hardcore single 'Tokyo Drifting' with Denzel Curry, proving that they still got it after absolutely blowing the doors off of the track. Despite dropping an experimental collaboration back in 2015 with Joey Bada$$, known by them as a "Fresh Fruit" release, it was definitely a surprise to see the indie rockers team up with the 25-year old punk rapper from Miami. The trap-inspired beat gave us something that we were not entirely used to, yet they still remained within their psychedelic pop identity throughout the song. After listening to this banger on repeat, it was clear that ‘Wavey’ Davey was definitely on fire and that Glass Animals were definitely back.
Early on in 2020, Glass Animals released another single titled 'Your Love (Deja Vu)'. The upbeat and groovy single matched the vibe of 'Tokyo Drifting', pushing fans to infer that they will be releasing a full album at some point this year. Before COVID-19 the group was touring and was able to get a decent amount of shows in before having to postpone the rest of the highly anticipated tour. They were booked to play some big shows, such as Red Rocks with Denzel Curry on June 16th and 17th.
Despite not being able to play high energy shows, Glass Animals has continued to heat up by releasing two new covers on April 17th, titled 'Quarantine Covers'. The singles include covers of Nirvana's 'Heart-Shaped Box' and Lana Del Rey's 'Young and Beautiful'. I highly recommend giving these two singles a listen as the group is able to pay tribute to the originals, yet also able to throw their own unique spin on these classic records.
As we sit in quarantine and do our best to contain this virus, let's hope that the release of Glass Animals' album is expedited so that we are able to once again enjoy the unique, fun, and goofy swagger that defines the band.
