The twenty-seven year old German singer/songwriter who is based out of Los Angeles, released the single “Malibu” last Thursday and it makes me feel as if summer has already arrived. This might not be Petras’ most impressive release, although it was the catchy pop song that I needed this May. “Malibu” features an upbeat tempo and joyful vocals from the singer, who is comparing the feeling and fantasy of Malibu to a guy.
This single is clearly inspired by the fantasized image of what outsiders believe Malibu to be, and Petras even told Out Magazine that Malibu Barbie and Baywatch created this image for her as a kid growing up in Germany. This vibe is very obvious while singing along to the lyrics:

“Malibu
And all your kisses taste like
Malibu (hoo)
And all your kisses taste like”
The peppy tone that Petras expresses throughout the song, shows the oblivion of people that are in love with a false image of someone and this can cause a great deal of pain down the road. Now, comparing this song to Malibu makes me want to roll my windows down, get lost in a fantasy, and blast this hit while driving down the PCH.
