Not Your Mom's Spaghetti - 'Alfredo' Comes out Swinging

Score: 8.6/10

Piñata.  Bandana.  Fetti.  Freddie Gibbs has two recurring themes within his discography - albums titled by single words and an impeccable flow different from any other. Gibbs stayed true to these consistencies in his newest collaboration, Alfredo. The 10-track album was produced by an industry great - The Alchemist - and features a prominent lineup including Rick Ross, Benny the Butcher, and Tyler, the Creator.

I was first introduced to The Alchemist through Action Bronson’s VICE series F*ck That’s Delicious and was always intrigued by his quiet and collected demeanor. This attitude is seen throughout Alfredo in The Alchemist’s smooth yet pungent beats that don’t overpower and mix beautifully with Freddie’s rhymes. I was a big fan of the guitar samples that carry many of the beats and the unique movie/television samples that couldn't have done a better job of setting the scene and tone.

Now let’s not forget about Freddie Gibbs. As typical of his other projects, Freddie comes in slowly on Alfredo. Yet after adjusting to his unique and old-school style, one can truly appreciate his unbelievable lyricism. I’m always impressed with how nonchalant Freddie can sound while laying down bars, which was still the case all throughout the complex rhymes of Alfredo. I also always enjoy hearing lyrics of recognition to the hip-hop greats within songs, so Freddie’s mentions of André 3000, Wu-Tang, and the likes made me appreciate this collaboration just a little more.

With talks of AOTY contention, be sure to check out Alfredo to see what all the hype is about for yourself.
