A couple days ago, I was stressfully sipping an iced dirty chai while trying to flourish my anticlimactic resume, when a groovy and meaningful song caught my attention. After whipping out Shazam, I realized that the song was “Antidote” by Orion Sun. I immediately began to listen to the song on repeat and realized that it was not the only masterpiece from the Philadelphia native.
In 2020, the young artist released two stunning albums. Her first album dropped in January of 2020, A Collection of Fleeting Moments and Daydreams, and her other album, Hold Space For Me was released later on in March. Both albums contain Sun’s vulnerable lyrics and semi-acoustic sounds.
A Collection of Fleeting Moments and Daydreams begins with the song “Orion”. This song preaches the importance of following one's dreams, even if they are far-fetched and seem impossible. Also, the song symbolizes the beginning of a new relationship, continuously repeating that “it’s only just begun.” The next few songs describe the crippling pain and infatuation that love creates. Sun poetically describes relationships by juxtaposing the magic and unavoidable instabilities that love makes us experience.
Additionally, Sun includes a live version of her song “Betterrr”. This authentic piece describes the desire to be with someone that is still processing their damages from past relationships. Sun writes, “I know we're different, but that makes us better,” because sometimes a new person can be the medicine to a history of broken relationships. The album ends with a freestyle between Sun and Mulch entitled “Mango”. This low-fi beat brings the listener to a feeling of safety and fun, which is much needed after the emotional ride that she takes us on.

On Hold Space For Me, her lyrics are still obviously inspired by love and pain. Although this time she includes more rap and buoyant beats, straying from her typical acoustic sound and into a more upbeat flow. The third song on the album “Ne Me Quitte Pas (Don’t Leave Me)” includes swift sounds that make the lyrics feel like they are swirling around your head. The next two songs, “Grim Reaper” and “El Camino” play with more spiritual and cultural lyrics, resembling fellow female artists Willow and Arlo Parks. Then on the track “Coffee For Dinner” she brings the listener into an almost psychedelic realm, exhibiting the human desire for love in order to escape loneliness.
Orion Sun is a new artist to keep an eye on, as she continues to create entrancing and meaningful music. Her authentic lyrics and calming voice make her new albums perfect to cry to, love to, or even listen to in a coffee shop.
