Untitled (Black Is): Indie/R&B/Soul

SAULT is mysterious, intriguing, and powerful. It seems as if nobody really knows who the R&B collective is, although everyone can agree that they produce impactful and groovy tracks with ease. The group's newest album Untitled (Black Is) was released suddenly, with it initially being released on SAULT's Instagram (@saultglobal) June 12th, and then officially on streaming platforms this last Friday. This is the collective's third album and undeniably the most poignant and complete.
Untitled (Black Is) consists of twenty-tracks, all unique, heart-wrenching, and rebellious. This powerful collective of soul, spoken-word, protest-chants, funk, and the endless amounts of uniqueness works to encompass the meaning and feelings that are associated with being Black. Amidst protests that are sweeping across the world and forcing people to have a conversation about the racial injustices that plague humanity, this project adds flames to the fire. Powerful lyricism paired with one-of-a-kind beats, makes this album a must listen.
On the track "Us" a woman speaks powerfully in spoken word, saying: "I don't believe in the myth of the angry Black woman, I believe in the magic of Blackness, we are the builders, we are the bridges, we are the connections that stick and lead you to riches." This is one of those lines that will stick with you and push you to ponder on these ideas. When it comes down to it, Black and Brown people built this country, they sparked cultural trends, social and political movements, and so much more. Yet, they continue to be oppressed, profiled, and murdered at high rates.
As a white male, I do not have the answers and it is not my fight to lead. But, I am ready to listen, fight, and follow the people of color that are leading this movement and pushing for both social and legislative change. Listen to Untitled (Black Is)...really listen, understand these perspectives, and urge your friends to listen. The album will impact you in ways that maybe an article or a video is unable to, and seek to further your ideas on the historical events that are occurring right now.
