As summer begins, I want to take a moment to reflect on all of the phenomenal music that has been released thus far in 2020 and share some of my favorite albums and EPs with you. In a historic time
defined by heartbreak, hope, love, fear, anger, and so many other emotions, music is always there to help us fight, heal, and come together. Music has the ability to influence individuals, whether that is through lyricism or production, and we must always listen to the stories that artists share with us. Without further ado, here are my top five albums and EPs of 2020 through June 8th.
Dua Lipa-Future Nostalgia (March 27, 2020)
Anyone that knows me definitely knows that I am a sucker for pop and I had been looking forward to this release for a while. The British-pop singer has irresistible energy and confidence, which was clear throughout this album and specifically on Don’t Start Now, Break My Heart, and Physical. The 24-year old is establishing herself as one of the top artists in the world, by utilizing pop and funk to ensure that you always have a good time while jamming to her releases.
Favorite songs:
-Cool
-Physical
-Break My Heart
The Weeknd- After Hours (March 20, 2020)
After not impressing with his last few albums, The Weeknd decided to stop playing around and gave us what may end up being the best album of 2020. I listened to the full album the night before I headed back home from my college due to the pandemic, and it was emotional. I may have not been completely sober, but it was one of the most amazing listens ever and I will never forget that.
Favorite songs:
-Hardest To Love
-Blinding Lights
-In Your Eyes
Denzel Curry & Kenny Beats-UNLOCKED (February 7, 2020)
This EP absolutely slaps. The Denzel x Kenny collaboration works so well, showcasing rawness and complete authenticity. Kenny gives Denzel hard beat after hard beat, allowing him to really go in and impress us with his intense flow and complex lyricism. The top songs are undoubtedly Take_it_Back_v2 and DIET_, but each of the eight-tracks offer something different.
Favorite songs:
-Take_it_Back_v2
-DIET_
-Track07
Tom Misch & Yussef Dayes- What Kinda Music (April 24, 2020)
For his second studio album, UK artist Tom Misch teamed up with fellow English drummer and producer Yussef Dayes. The two innovative musicians put together a funk filled project that is smoother than a stick of butter and something that I can play on repeat religiously. The drumming by Dayes is what seems to carry the album, although Misch also shines throughout and they are able to successfully blend funk, jazz, alternative, and laid back hip-hop beats.
Favorite songs:
-What Kinda Music
-Nightrider
-Last 100
Polo G- THE GOAT (May 15, 2020)
Polo G does a little bit of everything on this album and still manages to make it feel extremely meaningful and complicated. The rising hip-hop star is wise beyond his years and in my opinion transitions from trap-inspired beats to acoustic sounds better than any of the young rappers out there. Features from Mustard, Juice WRLD, Lil Baby, and others help Polo get through his second studio album, but he is the star in each and every moment.
Favorite songs:
-Beautiful Pain (Losin My Mind)
-Be Something
-Wishing For A Hero
