THE GOAT: Polo G Calls for Your Attention

Updated: May 23, 2020

Score: 8.6/10

Before this weeks release of THE GOAT, I was already pretty high on Polo G, as I believe that he is one of the top young rappers out there and after this release the 21-year old proves that he is here to stay. In 2019, the Chicago native dropped his debut album Die a Legend and by some it was considered one of the better hip-hops album of 2019, putting the young rapper on the map. Less than a year later, Polo G is back and in full force.

On this album, the melodic rapper sticks to his style and positively reflects on his life. Of course the young artist discusses the struggles and hardships that he has faced along his path to fame, although the focus seems to be on family and what was able to get him through these difficult and dark times. On the first track, “Don’t Believe The Hype” he raps:

"I dig deep into my spirit when I spit into the mic All them sit-downs in that county made me think about my life Went through some tragedies, I made it out to make it right I was doin' drugs just to get me through the night They weren't with me through my struggles, all this shit I sacrificed I climbed out the darkness, now my Patek shinin' bright I been ballin' just for you, I put y'all faces in my ice, oh, oh, oh"

Polo G continues to do exactly what I love about him and that is speak upon his emotions and experiences in an impactful manner that is easy to take in. He does this by balancing trap and pop styles, while being extremely raw and transparent on every track. Additionally, the frequent use of piano and guitar creates a tenderness and a unique beauty.

From self-reflection, to a Kobe reference, to the Juice WRLD feature, THE GOAT conveys and creates emotion. Polo G is quickly establishing himself as a top rapper and I don’t think he will give up until he reaches the top.

My Favorite Tracks:

Don't Believe The Hype

Beautiful Pain (Losin My Mind)

No Matter What

Be Something (feat. Lil Baby)
